Ree? Roof 23 MAR 12, I would ask you to draw the attention of His Excel- -lency the Governor to the fact that I perform the same duty as the Inspector of Marine Surveyørs in Singapore whose salary is £660 - £720, while Mr. Russell performs the same duty as the Government Marine Surveyor there. The salary suggested by His Excellency is inadequate and was offered to me when the sterling scheme came into force. It is the same as that of the G. M. S. in Penang, a port where there is only one surveyor and which cannot be compared to Hongkong as far as survey of shipping and other work performed by this sub-dept. is concerned. The G. M. S. in Penang also draws additional salary as Engineer Surveyor to Lloyds Register. I would ask that we be placed on the same basis as Singapore viz.:- GM.S. £660 to £720, 1st. Asst. G.M.S. £420 – £540, 2nd. Asst. G.M.S. £360 £420 with duty pay. On the maximum salary suggested by His Excellency the Governor viz.:- £660, on the completion of 4 years' service with 4 months vacation leave end 6 months leave of absence I would draw a sum of £3,355 against £3,325 on the dollar basis, a difference of £30 only, while my pension rate on the dollar basis would be calculated on a salary of £780 as against £660.

(8d.) James Macdonald, Government Marine Surveyor.

26th, January, 1912.
